AS THE WORLD SLEPT
“As the World Slept” beschrijft het verhaal van de geboorte van Jezus in Bethlehem. Hier is een samenvatting van de tekst:
In een wereld zonder prachtige paleizen, kronen of majestueuze gewaden wachtten de mensen op de komst van de Koning. Ze zochten naar een teken, hoop in wanhopige tijden, een wonder dat alleen God kon brengen. Velen droomden nog steeds van de dag dat Hij zou komen, en Bethlehem zou wel eens de uitverkorene kunnen herbergen.
Terwijl de wereld sliep op een stille nacht, werd de Verlosser geboren, en heel de schepping lachte. Maria had misschien wel de heilige ontvangen en bracht Gods enige Zoon ter wereld. Terwijl herders hun kuddes bewaakten, kondigde een engel vanuit de hoogte de komst van de Vredevorst aan.
Een ster van verwondering leidde de weg naar de stal waar Jezus lag, het geschenk van Gods liefde voor iedereen. Terwijl velen baden voor een aards koninkrijk, bleek het antwoord van de hemel te liggen in de geboorte van dit kind.
Het lied eindigt met de herhaling van de boodschap: “Terwijl de wereld sliep op een stille nacht, werd de Verlosser geboren, en heel de schepping lachte. Maria bracht Gods enige Zoon ter wereld.”
